WHEREAS, Angelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder first described by an English pediatrician, Dr. Angelman, in 1965; and WHEREAS, with familiarity of the disorder, more diagnoses are being made what was not long ago thought to be an extremely rate disorder; and WHEREAS, over 2,000 individuals have been identified with Angelman Syndrome in the United States, Canada, and other countries of the world, and it is believed that more remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed; and WHEREAS, Angelman Syndrome is being researched by numerous professionals in order to more accurately describe its origin, physical signs and symptoms, and behavioral characteristics; and WHEREAS, the Angelman Syndrome Foundations, established in 1990, is dedicated to educating and supporting parents and professionals dealing with Angelman Syndrome; and WHEREAS, citizens should be made more aware of Angelman Syndrome so that early diagnosis and intervention becomes a top Priority; NOW , THEREFORE, I JIM GIBBONS, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA do herby proclaim May 17, 2008, as ANGELMAN SYNDROME AWARENSS DAY |
