WHEREAS, U.S. professional truck drivers deliver safely and securely essential goods to every home, community, school, hospital and business in America, traveling more than 400 billion miles and delivering more than 10.7 billion tons of freight each year; and

WHEREAS, the more than 3.5 million men and women professional truck drivers who serve this nation, are among the safest of all drivers, and are dedicated to safety on our highways and in our workplaces, to the industry they work in, and to the citizens of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the men and women professional truck drivers of the state of Nevada safely deliver more than 146,935 tons of freight each day to over 79.9% of Nevada communities who depend solely on the professional truck drivers to receive their goods; and

WHEREAS, the professional truck drivers who keep the shelves of our local supermarkets fully stocked; deliver medicine and medical supplies to hospitals and clinics; and deliver goods at every stage of production – from raw materials to the store shelf, should be honored; and

WHEREAS, the citizens this Nation should take a moment and recognize the significant contributions of our professional truck drivers; the efficiency and safety that these drivers guarantee allowing businesses and private citizens to confidently ship goods across state lines and throughout America; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of the importance of professional truck drivers to our well-being and the economic value of their industry to Nevada, it is proper to honor the men and women truck drivers for the past and future contributions; and

WHEREAS, professional truck drivers should be recognized as vital to America; and

THEREFORE, I, JIM GIBBONS, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim August 24-30, 2008, as safe professional
