WHEREAS; the First United Methodist Church of Carson City, Nevada was founded in 1858 and chartered in October 1859 by The Reverend Jesse L. Bennett in Eagle Ranch, now known as Carson City; and

WHEREAS; Reverend Nims and Bishop Kingsley dedicated the sandstone, Gothic Revival Church on September 2, 1867; Reverend Nims labored almost single-handedly for three years, hauling the sandstone blocks from the State Prison where he had the prisoners quarry and square the stone; and

WHEREAS; the First United Methodist Church has been dedicated by historical marker #71 as “the Cradle of Nevada Methodism” and has provided a place for worship for all people, whatever their religious preference; and

WHEREAS; 2009 marks the 150th year of the First United Methodist Church of Carson City as a positive influence in our great city and state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JIM GIBBONS, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim October 17th, 2009 as a day in honor of

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF CARSON CITY’S SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE IN THE
STATE OF NEVADA
