Carson City - Governor Jim Gibbons today named Howard
Skolnik of Las Vegas Director of the Nevada Department of
Corrections. Skolnik will replace Director Glen Whorton, who
retires this month.
“Howard Skolnik is the right person for the job,”
said Governor Gibbons. “His 42 years of experience in
almost every aspect of corrections and his 20-year history in
Nevada’s prison system, combined with his excellent track record
within his profession and within his community, qualify him to
lead the Department of Corrections to the benefit of all
Nevadans.”
Howard Skolnik has been Deputy Director for Industrial Programs
at the Nevada Department of Corrections since 1987. He has also
served as Warden of the Southern Desert Correctional Center.
Before moving to Las Vegas 20 years ago, he worked at the
Illinois Department of Corrections in various leadership
positions. He earned his B.A. degree from Ohio State University
and his M.S.W. from the University of Illinois.
Skolnik has served on several boards and committees devoted to
excellence in corrections. He has also served in the leadership
of numerous Las Vegas community organizations, including the Las
Vegas Chamber of Commerce Business Council, the Leadership
Council, the Leadership Youth Council and the Boys and Girls
Club.
“I am flattered the Governor would select me to lead the
Department during this trying time in our history,”
said
Skolnik. “Our inmate population continues to grow,
and to keep up, we’re heading into the largest period of
construction we’ve ever seen in Nevada. I’m committed to
improving our operations while relying on our existing resources
by increasing accountability and realigning reporting
structures.”
Skolnik takes over the Director’s position February 16th,
the effective date of Glen Whorton’s retirement.
